Three Rivers was a television series featured by the CBS network. It aired weekly, on Sundays, for one hour. Three Rivers only ran for a year before getting cancelled. Hayao Miyazaki, perhaps, commands the same respect among audiences as Walt Disney for his world class animation films. He made some beautiful films like “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke”. We expected a good film when Ponyo hit the theaters. But we were disappointed. Thye plot is full of loopholes and other departments too lack a finesse which makes the film almost bad. It is an anime which will be liked by the kids but I am not sure about the teens.
The film is inspired by Hans Christain Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid”. The plot of the film is thus: a goldfish falls in love with a human boy and she hopes to become a girl so that she can live with the boy happily ever after. It is a simple love story that has been poorly told.
The film is an utter disappointment to the Miyazaki fans. He has directed classics like “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle” but he seems to have faltered while making this movie. The animation will not enthrall you and there is a good chance that people will get bored after the initial half an hour or so.
The script is the weakling of the movie, Ponyo. A bad script always results in a bad film and Ponyo is no exception. But this does not mean that there are no good scenes in the movie. We must mention at least one which is really good – the one in which Ponyo takes the human form and runs from the giant Tsunami will actually leave speechless. But one good scene does not make a good movie. But we definitely expected a lot from the Japanese filmmaker.
Ponyo (Noah Cyrus), a juvenile fish leaves her father (Laim Neeson) behind to explore the wider world. Her father is a magical sea guardian. In her expedition she gets caught in some sort of human trash and is swept ashore to the loving hands of Sosuke (Frankie Jonas), a five year old boy. The two of them develops a liking for each other. One fine day she tastes a drop of Sosuke’s blood which changes her into a little girl. Her father makes a valiant effort to stop the changes but fails to do so. Ponyo, on the other hand, does not listen to anybody and breaks free from the fishy world and head towards the surface.
There are a lot of questions that follow – why are the tides rising? Why is the moon drawing close? You need to watch the movie to find the answers to these. The underlying condition is that their love needs to blossom for world order to stabilize. I will not recommend watching this movie at a theater. You can watch Ponyo online free without any hassles.
The children will probably love Ponyo but I feel a sense of pity for the parents as it will be a real torture for them. The voice, though, is good especially by Cate Blanchette, Matt Damon and of course, Liam Neeson. The film boasts of good actors as the voices so it is sad to see such a poor product. We hope Mr Miyazaki will bounce back with his next. Till then we need to be contented with this one only.
