When we own a property, we feel as though we should be allowed to build whatever we want on it and make any changes we feel like. Though there are many things we can do without asking for permission, there are other things that require permission from the city. Depending on where you live and what you are trying to do, you may need garden planning permission.

Your city probably has a special planning council that will determine whether or not you can make the changes. Getting a decision from them can sometimes take many weeks, unfortunately.

Building a tall structure can also affect their views of things, so have a conversation with them before starting your work.

If you are going to be using the area for cars or as a driveway, permission may be required. Otherwise, feel free to turn the entire yard into concrete if you want.

The same goes for greenhouses, enclosures for animals, ponds, and sauna cabins. If any structure that you build ends up taking up lots of space, either horizontally or vertically, you may need to ask for permission. If what you build is for commercial reasons, you most likely will need permission.
